Cherung School, near the town of Salleri in Solukhumbu District, houses about 350 students, ages 5 to 18. In the summer of 2021 due to a tornado, two buildings of the school partially collapsed and became unsafe. The uninhabitable buildings and the Nepalese government’s inability to meet the costs of reconstruction forced the school to suspend the education of 50 students.
Together with Fondazione Mediolanum Onlus, to whom our thanks go, we have decided to finance the reconstruction of the collapsed buildings with modern construction techniques so as to prevent a recurrence of these events. Our partner on the ground, Monviso Nepal Foundation, will oversee the work. The construction site will open in October 2022, and pupils should be able to return to class by November.
